Design Brief:

Client:                        Mr. Smith’s Coffee Shop

Target Consumer:    University students 17-30 years old

Designer:                   _Allen Sam, Ethan Poon, Cedric Shaw, William Yeh_________________________

Problem Statement: The current lounge chair and living room-style seating areas in Mr. Smith’s Coffee Shop are too large and cannot accommodate the growing number of patrons.

Design Statement:   Design and model a modular table that will allow a greater number of patrons to be serviced at Mr. Smith’s Coffee Shop.

Constraints:
1.                  Minimum of two (2) adults seating per table.
2.                  Modular table design must interlock for stability.
3.                  Maximum material costs are $200 per table.
4.                  Maximum weight limit of 50 lb per table.
5.                  Initial design concept is due in 1 week.

Partner Introductions:

Cedric Shaw

Strengths: Good at CAD modeling, easy to work with in the sense that I follow orders, and I don't procrastinate (most of the time)
Weakness: I get lost easily (I require very specific instructions to get work done efficiently), I'm not that great at striking up conversations with people

Allen Sam (Me)
Strengths: Sketching, creativity
Weaknesses: CAD modeling precision

Research of other products with similar design brief:
Product 1

"Interlocking Oak Tables"
Company: the Wooden workshop
https://www.wooden-workshop.co.uk/our-products/garden-furniture/interlocking-oak-tables/

Elements: The designers of the table actually went with a traditional lock like a mason jar has, but it is hidden under the table to give the tables a nicer finish on top of the table.

Product 2

"Interlocking square coffee table"

Company: Michael Arras
https://hometone.com/interlocking-square-coffee-table-can-be-separated-into-two.html
(michael arras website is currently not a thing so this hometone website is the closest thing)

Elements: The designers went with more of a puzzle look more than an interlocking system. The top is made of smaller square pieces to make the resemblance of a puzzle much easier to recognize.

Product 3
"Sculptural Interlocking Tables"
Company: Peter Hvidt (Designer), France & Daverkosen (Maker)
https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/tables/coffee-tables-cocktail-tables/interlocking-coffee-table-peter-hvidt/id-f_494054/
Elements: This table's design definitely can save space within a setting where many people want to sit down. Because each piece is separable, each piece can be used as an individual table or link multiple to host a larger group of people. The triangle shape is also better for a setting like a coffee shop because groups are not as likely to come in a group of four, so a four-sided table is not required for the coffee shop setting.

Research for our product's life cycle.

Firstly, trees are harvested by a tree cutting company. The wood is the taken to a sawing company and is cut into boards. The boards have to be seasoned to remove excess water in the wood. After, the wood boards are sent to a lumber company and are cut to certain sizes for consumers to buy. Furniture manufacturers, or the customers of the boards, buy them and create the table. After its initial service, the table can be disassembled to be used as fuel, chipboard, or reused in other furniture.

For the steel in our coffee table, ore is first mined. Then, it goes into a blast furnace for heating and then converted to steel. Companies take this steel to produce plates, strips, bar sections, rails, pipes, and wire rods. These are use to make other products like bridges, vehicles, and phones. Products that have steel and become unusable are taken to steel recycling companies to extract metal scraps to be reused in steel-making.
Plastic starts with creation and manufacturing of the plastic material. A company takes it and can mold it into a product. Consumers buy a lot of plastic products like this L bracket on our coffee table. Plastic is then either thrown away when its initial service is done or recycled to make more plastic material.
